shelfy is an e-commerce configurator with 3D visualization that makes the individual design of IKEA Kallax shelving units simple and intuitive. The foundation is our proprietary metashop system.
It enables integration with various product providers. The web app combines an interactive UI for end users with a powerful back office for product maintenance and affiliate integration. It accelerates the creation of individual shelving designs, offers the world’s largest Kallax insert catalog, and at the same time provides the technological foundation for a scalable white-label and OEM business model.

The Problem

The following points outline the initial situation and the challenges that we gradually addressed and resolved over the course of the project.

  • Shelving designs could only be created with a limited product selection or using tools such as Photoshop

  • High manual effort in product maintenance was significantly reduced: product data is entered automatically, minimizing manual effort

  • Lack of a central platform to bundle products from multiple retailers (no metashop system)

  • Technical challenges in implementing high-performance 3D rendering within a web app

  • Complex filter functions for fast product search

  • High demand for an intuitive, mobile user experience for end customers and an efficient back office for internal administration

  • Price monitoring: partner website data is continuously retrieved via their APIs using Google Firebase Functions to automatically update product prices in the shop
  • Location-based shop: users see products and partner shops depending on their location – for example, Otto and Poco only in Germany, Walmart only in the USA
