UI/UX Design
skinja is an AI-powered skin analysis app for the early detection of abnormal skin changes for medical and cosmetic applications.
The application combines computer vision and edge computing for fast, offline skin analysis, offers an archive of scan histories and PDF exports for communication with doctors, and stands out thanks to its particularly user-friendly UI/UX design.
The problem
The following points show the initial situation and the challenges that we gradually addressed and solved during the course of the project.
-
No existing solution for AI-supported skin image analysis
-
High requirements for user-friendliness, data protection, and offline usage
-
Technical complexity due to the combination of AI, mobile app, and edge computing
-
Lack of structured reference architecture for comparable AI projects
-
UI/UX of competitors often outdated, confusing, or medically untrustworthy
-
Uncertainties in handling model training, performance on mobile devices, and statistical evaluation

Our expertise
skinja is not just about technology—it’s about our entire experience in developing user-centered, AI-based applications. From the initial idea to the functional prototype, we effectively combine design, machine learning, and mobile development.
AI Integration for Mobile Devices
UX Design for Trustworthy Health Apps
Health is a matter of trust. Our design approach combines a professional medical look & feel with intuitive user guidance—creating apps that are taken seriously yet remain easy to use.
Prototyping & Product Development Under One Roof
From the first wireframe to a functional MVP: we combine strategic thinking, technical expertise, and an agile mindset to build digital health products efficiently and resource-consciously.
Cross-Platform Apps with Modern Tech Stack
Our stack of Angular, Capacitor, and Swift enables fast development, easy maintenance, and a consistent user experience on web and mobile—responsive, scalable, and future-proof.
Edge Computing & Offline Functionality
Medical advice should be accessible everywhere—even without a stable internet connection. Our solution runs locally on the device while still providing powerful AI features without relying on the cloud.
Rapid Iteration & Testing in an Agile Setup
We build early testable prototypes to make ideas tangible and quickly gather real user feedback—instead of months of development in a vacuum.
Technological Decisions with Foresight
Our stack is based on modern, open standards—future-proof, modular, and independent of single vendors. This ensures short time-to-market and high flexibility for new requirements.
Design Systems & Prototypes with Figma
From early clickable mockups to full UI design: we work iteratively and closely with user feedback—using structured components, clear layouts, and interactive prototypes for early testing.
What Makes the Porting Technically Special
skinja combines modern web technologies with powerful AI—directly on the end device. The application is designed to work even without an internet connection, delivering high performance and offering a sophisticated, medically inspired UX. This is made possible by a cross-technology stack that has been specially optimized for mobile AI applications.
Frontend
-
Angular + TypeScript + SCSS: Structured, component-based development with a focus on maintainability and reusability—ideal for complex UIs with clear user guidance.
-
Capacitor: Native functionality on iOS devices, e.g., camera integration and file management—using a shared codebase for web and mobile.
-
Responsive UI: Optimized for different screen sizes and input methods—suitable for medical consultations as well as home use.
Backend & Cloud
-
TensorFlow + ONNX: A combination of established frameworks for deep learning and cross-platform AI execution with near-native performance.
-
Edge AI: Skin analysis runs directly on the device—no cloud required, with extremely low latency and maximum data privacy.
Artificial Intelligence
-
Offline-capable & resource-efficient: All core functions run locally—ideal for sensitive data and environments with limited connectivity.
-
Modular & future-proof: The tech stack is fully extensible—for new analysis models, additional scanning functions, or third-party integrations.
Special Features
-
Figma-supported development: High design standards through collaborative prototyping and systematic UX testing.
-
Trustworthy UI: Design follows medical standards—clean, minimal, accessible, and purpose-driven.

Our workflow with the
Double Diamond Method
The Double Diamond method is a proven design process that consists of four phases: understanding, defining, developing ideas, and implementing. It alternates between divergent thinking (exploring many possibilities) and convergent thinking (focusing and selecting). This results in user-centered solutions that are both creative and goal-oriented.
Interaktiver Prototyp in Figma
- Served for early alignment with stakeholders
- Visualization of the entire user journey – from skin analysis to results presentation
- Testing of user interactions and information architecture
Findings Overview & Progression
Clear overview of all analyzed skin areas with direct risk indication.
Filters by date, skin area, or most recently opened allow quick comparison and targeted evaluations.
- Structured view for medical findings
- Intuitive filtering and editing options
- Supports fast, well-informed decision-making
PDF Export for Doctors and Patients
- Findings and scans can be exported as PDFs for safekeeping or sharing as needed.
This helps users keep track of their skin history and share documents with doctors when necessary.- PDF export of individual scans or entire histories
- Clear presentation of images, names, dates, and risk levels
- Ability to add personal notes to skin areas
- This feature promotes personal responsibility and provides clear documentation of skin development.
